The Beetle Who Is a Chemist

Science Fiction: With over 46000 species in thousands of genera, the group is the second largest family of beetles after the Curculionidae (the true weevils). It is an ancient group, with fossil rove beetles known from the Triassic, 200 million years ago. Makes more sense then the above. The beetle is featured prominently in the science-fiction/horror novel “The Devil’s Coach Horse” (known as “The Black Horde” in North America) by Richard Lewis. In the novel an evolved and flesh hungry type of the beetle is unknowingly released in Great Britain and the United States. One such creature is the large-eyed rove beetle. Like many other insects, this beetle can walk on water. The surface tension of the water is enough to support the beetle on top of the water, given the special structure of his legs and feet. Should you see the large-eyed rove beetle, you will notice that he moves across the water, stops, turns, and starts
